World War II Munitions, Torpedoes and Naval Mines: How Marine Life Thrives on Discarded Weapons

In the slightly salty sea off the German coast rests a wasteland of Nazi bombs, torpedo heads and naval mines. Dumped from vessels at the end of the second world war and forgotten about, countless weapons have become matted together over the decades. They comprise a decaying layer on the shallow, muddy ocean floor of the Bay of Lübeck in the western part of the Baltic.

Over the years, the wartime weapons was overlooked and neglected. A growing number of tourists traveled to the sandy beaches and tranquil sea for water sports, kiteboarding and entertainment venues. Beneath the surface, the weapons deteriorated.

What they discovered amazed them. Vedenin recounts his colleagues shouting with surprise when the underwater vehicle first sent the images back. It was a memorable occasion, he recalls.

Thousands of ocean life had made their homes among the weapons, creating a revitalized habitat denser than the seabed nearby.

This marine city was evidence to the persistence of life. Truly surprising how much marine organisms we observe in locations that are expected to be toxic and harmful, he states.

In excess of 40 sea stars had clustered on to one visible chunk of TNT. They were living on iron containers, fuse pockets and storage boxes just centimetres from its explosive filling. Marine fish, crabs, anemones and mussels were all observed on the discarded explosives. It's similar to a coral reef in terms of the quantity of creatures that was there, states Vedenin.

Remarkable Creature Concentration

An average of more than forty thousand creatures were residing on every square metre of the explosives, researchers wrote in their study on the finding. The nearby seabed was much less diverse, with only 8,000 organisms on every meter squared.

It is ironic that things that are designed to kill everything are hosting so much marine organisms, states Vedenin. One can observe how nature adjusts after a catastrophic event such as the second world war and how, in some way, life establishes itself to the most dangerous places.

Man-made Features as Marine Environments

Man-made features such as shipwrecks, wind turbines, drilling platforms and pipelines can offer substitutes, compensating for some of the destroyed habitat. This investigation reveals that weapons could be comparably advantageous – the proliferation of marine organisms on those in the Lübeck Bay is probable to be repeated in different areas.

Between the late 1940s and 1948, 1.6 million tons of weapons were dumped off the German shoreline. Countless of workers transported them in vessels; a portion were dropped in designated areas, the remainder just discarded at sea en route. This is the first time experts have studied how ocean organisms has responded.

These areas become even more valuable for organisms as the marine environments are increasingly depleted by commercial fishing, bottom trawling and anchoring. Sunken ships and munitions areas essentially serve as protected areas – they are not official reserves, but virtually any kind of anthropogenic disturbance is banned, says Vedenin. Consequently a many of organisms that are usually uncommon or diminishing, such as the Baltic cod, are thriving.

Coming Considerations

Anywhere armed conflict has happened in the past 100 years, surrounding seas are usually containing munitions, says Vedenin. Millions of tonnes of explosive material rest in our oceans.

The locations of these explosives are insufficiently recorded, partly because of sovereign limits, secret armed forces records and the fact that archives are buried in historic archives. They create an detonation and safety hazard, as well as danger from the ongoing emission of toxic chemicals.

As Germany and different states begin removing these artifacts, scientists aim to protect the marine communities that have developed in their vicinity. In the Lübeck Bay explosives are currently being removed.

It would be wise to substitute these iron structures originating from munitions with certain more secure, some harmless materials, like perhaps man-made habitats, says Vedenin.

He presently hopes that what occurs in Lübeck establishes a model for substituting structures after explosive extraction in different areas – because including the most harmful weaponry can become scaffolding for new life.
