The bodies of a mother aged 34 and her young daughter, 10 have been located inside freezing appliances in an residence in western Austria.

The deceased, a Syrian woman and her daughter, who had been missing for several months, were uncovered on Friday. The cooling units were concealed behind a false wall in the flat, located in the Innsbruck area.

Two individuals, a 55-year-old Austrian and his 53-year-old brother, were detained in June. The 55-year-old, a work associate of the female victim, stated to authorities last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but rejected murder.

Addressing journalists earlier, a spokesman for the state prosecutor announced the two suspects were being kept in custody on "strong suspicion of murder".

The identities of those implicated have been withheld by law enforcement, in following national regulations.

The vanishing of the mother and child was initially flagged by the cousin of the mother, who lives in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Investigators stated the woman's colleague claimed at the time she had taken an prolonged visit with her daughter to travel to her relatives in the nation of Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then found to have been used overseas on multiple occasions.

But when police examined the mother's apartment, her cellphone was located.

Someone also reported listening to a disturbing sound in the apartment, and cries of "mama" on the occasion the mother and child were presumed to have gone missing.

A broader criminal probe was started, with authorities finding several texts sent from the mother's device—such as a resignation letter to her company and messages to the male associate.

Law enforcement confirmed a significant cash transfer was also sent to the suspect.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office told reporters on Tuesday that a storage unit had been rented out before the vanishing and a freezing appliance had been positioned inside.

The male siblings removed the cooling unit from the unit on the date the woman and her child vanished, Tersch stated. And a week later, they obtained a second unit.

Authorities believe they think this indicates the deaths were intentionally orchestrated.

"The reason for their demise remains unclear due to the state of decomposition of the victims," she commented.

Mayr—of the public prosecutor's office—stated the exact sequence of events is still unclear, but the victims were carefully placed and went unnoticed during a prior examination.

While the brothers were detained in the summer, it was not until November 12 that the elder brother acknowledged an incident and to concealing the remains. He rejects any plan to cause death, authorities stated.

In a related development, his younger brother acknowledged a concealment but denied knowledge of a homicide.

The pair are at this time in detention before court proceedings in jails in separate locations, around 117 miles (189km) apart.

Through a combined announcement, the nation's official for women's affairs and the top legal representative stated the "reported homicide of mother and child... constitutes the swift and cruel conclusion of two human lives and reveals a heartless setup".

"Females of all ages are being murdered due to the sole reason that they are female," they added.

"Femicides are a strongly established and society-wide problem that we must fight resolutely."
