The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Attack
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
