The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with five in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
