A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the 40-year-old entertainer was confronted by three suspects, with one began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The reason of the shooting has not been established and no arrests have taken place, police said.

Details of the Attack

Police said that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a building near the city center landmark.

He had devoted time at the building supervising the installation of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, according to reports.

"Authorities believe the deceased was confronted by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," an official report confirmed.

Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but fell down a short distance away.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the assault.

Key evidence, like spent shells, were recovered from the crime scene.

Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.

"Our information indicates they covered significant ground after the attack, and officers have been following their trail to find their whereabouts," remarked an authority figure.

Family and Public Reaction

His sister, Nicole Stock, stated the relatives are devastated to understand the tragedy.

"I am in shock. I don't have words," she stated.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were willing to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."

She urged the citizens to refrain from sharing explicit content from the incident, noting this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's three sons.

In a communication, the channel he worked for said Stock was known for his presence, approachability and quick humor, adding that his memory "will live on".
