Fury Explodes as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Rebuke
Personalities from across the partisan divide and the Hollywood world are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the tragic passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Online Statement
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on his platform to label the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Detention
Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
“What a vile and vile statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. Goldberg pointed to prior comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no decency? Can you get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from His Own Party
Some GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly dared others in his party to defend the comments.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation after the shooting of a different individual.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
