Britain Prepared to Use Seized Russian Funds to Finance Ukraine's Defense
The United Kingdom is set to progress with using the total value of frozen Russia's holdings to support the Ukrainian military campaign, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has declared.
In a collective announcement, the leaders of the Britain, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany asserted that this joint measure would escalate tension on Russia's leader Vladimir Putin and urge Russia to come to the table.
They clarified that the move would be implemented in close cooperation with the America.
UK sanctions have frozen more than ÂŁ25bn of Russian funds since Moscow initiated its comprehensive attack against the Ukrainian nation in 2022. Yet, previously, money provided to the Ukrainian government using Russian holdings had exclusively been taken from earnings and returns accrued on them.
Sir Keir told Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky that the UK, the French Republic, and the Federal Republic of Germany were united in their goal to push forward toward using the total worth of the frozen Moscow's national assets to halt hostilities.
He stated that additional restrictions in the coming days and weeks would increase the strain on the Russian government.
This declaration comes after European Union representatives met in the Danish capital recently to discuss utilizing frozen Russia's funds for a 140-billion-euro loan to the Ukrainian nation.
In the previous month, US President Donald Trump called on G7 allies to seize or employ immobilized Russia's assets, as reported by media sources.
The value of immobilized Russia's holdings in the European Union is estimated to be nearly €211bn.
President Zelensky urges the United Kingdom's Sir Keir Starmer to take part in the weapons procurement program
Moscow launched widespread aerial attacks across the Ukrainian territory on that day, leading to blackouts in large parts of Ukraine's capital, the city, and several other zones.
Several persons were lost their lives and at least 20 people were injured in the strike, authorities in Ukraine stated.
In a message on an online platform following the strike, Zelensky stated that the cynical and calculated attack focused on civilian and energy infrastructure.
"What is required is not mere statements but firm measures - from the America, the European Union, and the G7 - in providing air defence systems and implementing sanctions," he wrote.
"Each restrictive measure diminishes Moscow's military apparatus," Zelensky wrote, in a separate post.
Also on Friday, Zelensky told the press he would urge Sir Keir to join the Purl scheme, under which alliance members acquire military equipment from the United States to give to Ukraine.
While applauding the UK's strong support for Ukraine, he said it should send a clear signal that it would take part in the program, as well as enforce further measures on Moscow.
